Science & Social Studies 6
Instructor: Ms. Dixon
Welcome to my web page!!  I'm Ms. Dixon and I teach sixth grade science and social studies in the Lightning Bolt teamI am so excited to be working with amazing kids this year!  If you have any questions, feel free to call, e-mail, or send a note with your child.

Lindsey and Kanan got a chance to interview me. Here are some of the questions and answers:

~K and L:      In your opinion, what is science and how is it related to daily life?

Ms. Dixon:     Science is trying to understand and explain things around you. You use science in daily life to overcome problems and reach conclusions.

~K and L:       Why is social studies important in daily life?

Ms. Dixon:     It is important that we are aware of not only how we live, but how others in the world live as well.

~K and L:       So what will we be learning in science and social studies this year?

Ms. Dixon:      My focus in social studies will be South America and Russia.  The students will rotate for social studies, so other teachers will teach them about Europe.  During science we will be studying optical illusions, micro invertebrates,  rocks and minerals, and the solar system.

~K and L:      What do you enjoy most about teaching?

Ms. Dixon:     I love getting to be with students and interacting with them.

~K and L:
What are some of your hobbies?

Ms. Dixon:     My hobbies include hiking, sailing, kayaking, traveling, and photography.  If you see me coming with my camera, you better smile!

Effective Ways To Search
When searching the web for Science Fair Projects or any other information, notice the end of the URL. Reliable information is not usually found on websites with the extension .com because anybody can create this type of website. Some reliable web extensions are .org, .edu, .gov, or .mil. These sites will ensure that you find true information.

Science Fair Projects
We are currently working on the Science Fair projects.  The whole project is due on Monday, December 14, 2009. More information is to come soon about deadlines.  The research paper for your project is due on Thursday, October 29th.
If help is needed, this is a short description of the scientific method you will be using for your project.

Scientific Method:
  • Statement of Purpose (due October 16): Two or three sentences that tells the reader why you're doing this experiment.
  • Background research and information (due October 29): This paper should be at least one and a half page pages long. Be sure to write it in your own words!
  • Hypothesis (due November 3): An educated guess about what you think will happen during this experiment.
  • Materials (due November 10): All of the supplies you will need in order to complete this project.
  • Procedure (due November 10): A list of the steps you will follow in this experiment.
  • Observations and Results (due November 19): Tell what your observations were and record your results in charts or graphs.
  • Conclusion (due November 19): A statement of what you learned from this experiment and whether your hypothesis was right or wrong.
  • Absract (due December 14): It is a written overview of you entire project.  The display board is due on December 14th as well.
